FAQ

How much does Invisalign cost? How long does Invisalign take? Find answers to these questions and more.

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is a comfortable, convenient way to straighten teeth without braces, using computer-generated, 3D-printed aligners. The aligners are made of clear, thin, BPA-free, medical-grade plastic that is virtually invisible when worn.

Dr. Durschlag uses advanced 3D imaging technology to precisely plan your tooth movements. Invisalign prints a series of clear, custom-made aligners according to his specifications. The aligners gradually and comfortably shift your teeth into place. You wear each set of aligners for one to two weeks, moving from one set to the next, until you reveal your new smile.

Why should I choose an orthodontic specialist for Invisalign treatment?

When you have a skin concern, you go to a dermatologist. If you injure your shoulder, you see an orthopedist. Just like these specialists who study their specialty areas after finishing their general medical education, orthodontists devote two to three extra years of study to orthodontics after graduating from dental school.

Like their medical counterparts, orthodontists also limit their practice to their specialty area, meaning they only offer orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. This ensures they have the knowledge and skill to help you get the best possible results.

Dr. Durschlag took the additional voluntary step of becoming board certified. As a result of his extensive education and experience, he’s an expert in straightening the teeth and aligning the bite.

While dentists can offer Invisalign, they often only take a short course to learn about the Invisalign system, but not all of the factors that need to be considered when straightening teeth. You should always see an orthodontic specialist like Dr. Durschlag for Invisalign treatment, because they’re dedicated to helping your teeth and jaws work in harmony, so you can speak, chew and bite comfortably and effectively.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Perhaps the most popular benefit of Invisalign is that the aligners are clear. You can straighten your teeth without anyone having to know! Other benefits include:

  • Removable — You can still eat and drink what you want.
  • Better oral hygiene — You can brush and floss normally to maintain healthy teeth and gums.
  • Comfortable — There are no wires, metal or brackets to irritate the mouth or cause an injury if you get hit in the face while playing sports.
  • Fewer visits — We know your time is valuable and with Invisalign®, you’ll have fewer office visits overall.

Does Invisalign hurt?

No. Invisalign does not hurt. However, when you first start treatment and, sometimes, when changing to your next set of aligners, your teeth can feel a little sensitive. Discomfort is minimal and will go away within a few days. If needed, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever. Changing to your next tray at night will be helpful too, as you’ll sleep through some of the adjustment period.

How often do I need to wear my Invisalign aligners?

Wear your aligners for about 22 hours per day for the best results. Only take them out to eat, drink anything aside from plain water, brush and floss your teeth and wear a mouthguard while playing sports. You’ll change to your next tray every one to two weeks, depending on your treatment plan.

How do I clean my Invisalign aligners?

You’ll find all sorts of tips and tricks for how to clean Invisalign trays. But, keep in mind, you’ll be changing your aligners every week or two, which means by the time they need a deep clean, you’re usually on to the next set. Soaking your aligners or using the Invisalign cleaning system is optional.

The easiest, most affordable way to keep your aligners clean is to simply brush them with a designated, soft-bristled toothbrush and rinse them in lukewarm water. You can also use a mild, unscented dishwashing soap if you have stubborn plaque. Just avoid using hot or boiling water as it can warp the aligners.

Can I chew gum with Invisalign?

Yes, you can chew gum with Invisalign. But, you’ll want to take your aligners out first to avoid having a mess on your hands.

Can I smoke with Invisalign?

No. Smoking with your Invisalign aligners in will cause discoloration. They’ll no longer be clear and virtually invisible.

How often do I need to visit San Diego Smile Pros during my Invisalign treatment?

Most patients visit for a checkup every eight weeks or so. With options for virtual appointments, however, we can monitor your progress remotely, potentially increasing the length between in-person visits.

Can I get Invisalign if I’m in the military?

Yes! As a veteran-owned orthodontics practice, we value our military families here at San Diego Smile Pros. Dr. Matthew Durschlag treats patients who are active in all branches of the military using the Invisalign® system. Except in certain cases, the U.S. Military typically does not approve orthodontic braces for those on active duty. Invisalign is an excellent alternative.

We even have patients who are straightening their teeth while deployed! Because Dr. Durschlag creates a precise, digital treatment plan at the start and the aligners are then printed in a series, he’s able to provide our Invisalign military patients with enough trays to last them until their next appointment at our office.

We’re also equipped to offer virtual appointments. Dr. Durschlag can keep tabs on patients’ progress remotely, ensuring their treatment stays on track from wherever they are. Additionally, our practice offers a military discount to all military families.

If your spouse is either deployed or living in another city, we are even capable of doing virtual consultations, so they can be a part of your Invisalign treatment! Don’t let the miles apart keep you from a life-changing experience. Since you’re serving our country, let us serve you and help you get the smile you’ve always wanted!

How old is Invisalign technology?

In 1945, Dr. H.D. Kiesling discussed his vision for modern technology that would produce the kinds of tooth movements needed for comprehensive treatment using a series of tooth positioners. In the early 2000s, Align Technology made his vision a reality.

Using digital scanning and advanced treatment planning software, your orthodontist creates a treatment plan. Then, Align Technology produces Invisalign, a series of customized clear aligners based on the doctor’s specifications. Each aligner is worn sequentially to generate gradual tooth movements in the patient’s upper and lower arches.

How much does Invisalign cost?

As with other orthodontic options, your Invisalign cost will be based on the complexity of your case and the length of treatment. During the initial exam, Dr. Durschlag will determine the complexity of your case, the estimated length of treatment, and the cost.

We don’t want the investment to prevent you from having the smile you have always wanted. That’s why we accept most insurance plans and offer a variety of payment options, including flexible financing, to suit your individual needs. All of this will be discussed during your complimentary consultation.

Does my insurance cover Invisalign?

A dental insurance policy that covers orthodontics will cover treatment with Invisalign® as well. Call our office so we can help you maximize your benefits!

Are financing options available for Invisalign?

Yes! Our practice offers NO INTEREST financing through CareCredit and in-house financing! This way, you can break up the cost of your Invisalign treatment into affordable monthly payments.

Am I a candidate for Invisalign?

The only way to know for sure if Invisalign is the best treatment option for you is to visit an orthodontist for an evaluation. At San Diego Smile Pros, all cases are Invisalign cases. Because of Dr. Durschlag’s training and expertise, this means nearly every patient is a candidate for Invisalign at our practice.
