Surgical
Surgical orthodontics involves a combination of orthodontic treatment and corrective jaw surgery.
A coordinated approach to care
More cases than ever before can be treated non-surgically. However, when an adult has severe malocclusion (improper bite) related to the size or shape of the jaw, sometimes, surgical orthodontics is still the best option. As a board-certified orthodontist, Dr. Matthew Durschlag is the expert to turn to. He can coordinate with your oral surgeon to help you achieve life-changing results.
Surgical Orthodontics With Braces AND Invisalign®
Many orthodontists only do surgical orthodontics with braces. Dr. Durschlag is one of the few local doctors who also offers surgical orthodontics with Invisalign. This is because he has extensive training and case experience with clear aligners, including in complex surgical cases. So you’ll be able to choose the treatment you really want.
Who Can Benefit From Surgical Orthodontics?
Because surgical orthodontics is a multi-step process that entails a recovery period, it’s reserved for severe orthodontic issues that impact a patient’s appearance, health or function and can’t be corrected with braces or Invisalign alone. Corrective jaw surgery, called orthognathic surgery, is only indicated for adults whose jaws are done growing.
How Does Surgical Orthodontics Work?
Dr. Durschlag uses digital imaging and advanced computer software to create a precise, highly accurate treatment plan in coordination with your oral surgeon. You’ll start by wearing braces or Invisalign® for about nine to 18 months prior to your surgery.
Then, your oral surgeon will perform corrective jaw surgery in a hospital or surgical center with the goal of bringing your jaw into alignment. Depending on the degree of correction and type of procedure needed, the surgery can take several hours.
After a four-to-eight week healing period, you’ll wear braces or aligners one more time, usually for six to 12 months. This lets Dr. Durschlag finetune your bite. Finally, he’ll design custom retainers for you to wear, ensuring your results last a lifetime.
